Roxy Theatre

The Roxy Theatre in Ouyen is one of the last remaining sub-tropical picture theatre in the Southern Hemisphere.  Both sides of The Roxy’s walls can still be raised to allow for cross ventilation, a hallmark of the sub-tropical style.

Embodying the true Ouyen community spirit, the town stepped up to the challenge when the Roxy was under threat of being abandoned. After 36 years of closure of the theatre, community member Jenny Heaslip took on the challenge of restoring the building and rallied over 250 local volunteers to help her.

The historic theatre, first built mid-30s, remains exactly as it was when it was first built in the mid-30s.

These days, The Roxy is a largely volunteer-run arts precinct and function centre and an integral part of the community, with films and events still regularly scheduled through the year.
